In our relentless quest to spread the love for cashmere, we had surprisingly found that a number of people are put off from buying cashmere pieces because they are unsure of how to look after it or think it will be too difficult to keep looking as beautiful as when they bought it. Particularly, some are worried their cashmere will bobble, and it will be ruined and unwearable. So to put the myths to bed, here’s our cashmere care guide to pilling or bobbling as it’s also known to ensure you get the best out of your cashmere.
What is pilling?
Pilling or bobbling, as it is sometimes called, is when little balls of fiber form on the surface of your cashmere or wool.
What causes my cashmere to pill?
Pilling occurs naturally over time after wearing and washing your cashmere, particularly if you’re wearing coats or jackets over the top of the garment. Loose fibers are pushed out to the surface of the fabric, and when abrasion occurs, it causes the fibers to be clumped together in little balls. Areas where the most abrasion occurs naturally experience the most pilling, such as cuffs or under the arms.
My cashmere has pilled, is it ruined?
This one, of course, is a concern to many, as you’d expect a high-quality item to last more than a few washes. Pilling is common for most new cashmere pieces, and it does not mean that your lovely new scarf is ruined! The final part of our cashmere care blog series is focused on another area that we repeatedly get questions about – “How do I wash my cashmere? I guess I have to get it dry-cleaned?” Guess again. All cashmere scarves are 100% machine washable (yes, you read that correctly!). Here are our top tips to keep your cashmere clean and looking gorgeous every time you wear it.
- Keep it cool – When we say “machine washable,” this doesn’t mean you can pop it in at 60 degrees with everything else and hope for the best! We recommend having the temperature set to 30 degrees or set to ‘Cool’ for the best results.
- Delicate matter – Use the delicates or hand-wash setting of your machine with non-biological powder or gentle liquid and definitely no fabric conditioner as cashmere hates conditioner. It contains enough natural oils and does not require any more.
- Treat with care – Although machine washable, cashmere should only be put into a wash with a few, similar colored hand towels or another piece of knitwear. Turning your cashmere inside out will help too, and you can place it into a white pillowcase for extra care.
- Dry out – One thing that we must be clear on – do not put your cashmere in the tumble dryer! Unless you plan to dress a small child with it – it will shrink. Remove your cashmere from the washing machine as soon as the cycle is finished and air dry flat, avoiding direct heat such as radiators or strong sunlight. Be sure not to pull or mis-shape while drying, or it may stay like that once dry. After a few hours, turn the right way out again and continue to dry. Once dry, you can store your cashmere in a garment bag with an anti-moth sachet to keep the moths away.
