There’s nothing I don’t love about fall. I love it when the leaves start to change, I love it when it becomes more socially acceptable to wear as much dark lipstick and nail polish as I do all year round, I love when my birthday rolls around (it’s in November if anyone wants to start preparing the gifts I know you’re all planning to send my way), and most of all, I love fall coats. Perhaps the only thing I prefer to fall sweaters; fall coats can completely transform an outfit—some of them are even outfits in and of themselves.
Sure, I might be jumping the gun a little bit in looking for fall coats when summer has just barely started to fade away in New York City, but I can’t help it. I’m just too excited, and I want to share my excitement with all of you. I’m sure you all have your favorite fall coats just hanging in your closet, practically begging to be worn, but if you’re in the market for a new one (or seven), here are some of my recommendations:
1. Black Swan Emma Dark Grey Trench Coat
Okay, so I haven’t actually felt this coat yet, but I imagine this feels just like your favorite flowy button-down.
2. Cloak And Mirrors Black Cape
It’s officially official: Capes are back. This is one trend I’ve always been a little bit nervous to try for fear of coming off as too “fashion person”-y, but you know what? I’m determined to do it this year. Capes just make everything look so classy!
3. BB Dakota Gunievere Jacket
I’ve been into this particular duster coat for a little while now, and when I told my grandma about it, she was practically beside herself. And when something has my grandma’s seal of approval, you know it’s good.
4. Rachel Roy Faux Leather Sleeve Trench Coat
Leather jackets are great and all (I have one, and I love it), but when it starts to get cooler, you’re going to want a little bit more coverage. This trench coat is the best of both worlds.
5. Textured-Weave Coat
This coat is a little bit heavier, so maybe it’ll be better suited for the later autumn months, but I love that this coat has a zipper closure instead of buttons. Something about that just makes it feel more modern to me.
6. Longline Pinstriped Blazer
Blazers are always a good idea, so that pretty much makes a longline blazer an amazing idea. That’s how that science works, right?
7. LC Lauren Conrad Runway Collection Faux-Suede Moto Jacket
I already raved about how awesome this coat looking during Lauren Conrad’s runway show, so I guess it’s kind of overkill that I’m featuring this moto jacket here, too. But you know? I don’t care because everything about it, from the faux suede to the rose gold zipper detail to the fact that it also comes in the most perfect forest green color, is perfect.
8. Jack by BB Dakota Aviation Admiration Jacket
Shearling, in my opinion, pretty much only works for fall (I prefer faux fur or wool for winter, personally, and it’s too heavy for spring and summer), so take advantage of the few months you have!

9. AEO Light Swing Jacket
This is my idea of the perfect early autumn coat. I have a similar Missoni one that I bought at Target a few years back, and I’m obsessed with it. It’s not too heavy, not too light, and it’s the perfect neutral color for any occasion. Sure, it might be a little casual, but you can dress it up just as easily as anything else. Or, if you’d rather not, there are 11 other fancier options on this here list of mine.
10. Fashion Union Plaid Coat
Ah, plaid. I can’t say enough good things about plaid, so I’ll just say this: If you don’t own at least one plaid piece for this season, you’re doing it wrong.
11. Denim Girlfriend Jacket in Black With Contrast Stitch
I’ll be totally honest: You’ll probably never see me, personally, wearing a denim jacket. I had one when I was younger, and for some reason, I can’t stop associating them with middle school. But I absolutely love the way they look, and I love the dark denim on this one in particular.
12. Grey Panelled Inverse Collar Jacket
This is just perfect. It feels like the ideal combination of professional and stylish, and it works for just about every possible occasion. Need I say more? (I won’t.)
