How Owning a Dog Can Lead to a Healthier Lifestyle

If you are looking to improve your mental and physical health, then you may want to add a new dog to your family. These furry friends make wonderful companions, and they could help you to feel better about yourself and get in better shape just by having them by your side. If you are thinking of adopting a new pet, then we are here to tell you why doing so could be the best decision that you will ever make.

Dogs Improve Your Mental Health

Many people don’t realize just how beneficial pets, especially dogs, can be for our mental health. Dogs are constant companions that will be by your side through thick and thin. They will sit by your feet and eagerly listen to your problems and give you a lick once you are done to make you feel better. Dogs are incredibly loyal, and they are up for anything. Sometimes, if you are especially stressed, then a walk around the block and some fresh air is exactly what you need, and your pup will be along for the ride.

According to a recent study, it has also been shown that dogs can help with more severe issues, like dementia, and can often improve the patient’s confidence and self-esteem. Dogs can also be great companions for veterans with PTSD because the calming influence of a pet can help us to be less angry and more understanding. If necessary, professional help should also be considered, but a dog is a great supplement for that care.

Dogs are great companions to older Americans regardless of their mental condition. Sometimes, all we want is to feel needed, and a dog can provide seniors with a healthy routine that will keep them engaged. Our furry friends also help us to be more mindful and in the moment instead of worrying about the world around us. Even the simple act of cuddling our dog can help us to feel more relaxed and give us time to think through our problems.

Dogs Get You Outside

When you own and care for a dog, you are almost guaranteed to improve your physical health or at least get more activity than you did in the past. Dogs need to be let outside to play, use the bathroom, and take their walks. Since you will be along for the ride, you will get in some good cardio. At a minimum, you’ll stretch your body as you lean down to pick up their ball and throw it to the other side of the yard.

Dogs can also help you to get out of your comfort zone. While you may never have thought of taking long walks down the beach or going to a dog park in the past, you may feel more inclined to do so, if only to show your pooch a good time. Doing so gives you a chance to engage in new and unique physical motions, and you could meet other dog owners who may invite you to even more engaging activities. All of these reasons make it easy to see why dog owners often live longer than other people.

Even though getting out with your dog is great for your physical health, you must supplement that activity with smart decisions, like thinking about what you eat. A healthy diet of berries, nuts, leafy greens, and lean meat can do wonders to help you to continue to lose weight, feel great, and get natural energy along the way. Avoid fried food and processed meats that can make you feel weak and lethargic.

Just remember to have fun along the way, and don’t be so concerned about weight loss that it consumes your thoughts. Many “fat-friendly” doctors are even starting to be less skeptical of their patient’s weight as long as they see that you have a generally healthy lifestyle. A dog can provide what you need.

Return The Favor By Keeping Them Healthy And Safe

Since dogs do everything they can to help us to be active and healthy, it is only right that we return the favor. Do your research for your particular breed so you can ensure that you are providing the best options. When you buy dog food, make sure that it meets your pet’s nutritional needs, and if you are not sure what they are, then talk to your veterinarian.

You should also be aware of the warning signs of common illnesses, like irritability, loss of appetite, and increased barking. Again, your vet is your best friend in these situations. It is also a good idea to purchase a pet insurance policy so that you know you can afford care in an emergency.

You should also do anything you can to keep your dog out of harm’s way. That includes staying near them when they play outside, keeping them cool and covered during hot days, and preventing your pup from getting into fights. Finally, consider having your pet equipped with a microchip so you can easily find them if they are lost. 

As you can see, there are many benefits to owning a wonderful dog. Consider this advice, and if you are sold on the idea, then go adopt a new pooch today.
