Nine in the morning on a quay in Sorrento. A group of six steps on board with a list written the night before: the Faraglioni, the Blue Grotto, lunch on Capri, then across to Positano, a swim near Li Galli, a look at Amalfi from offshore, and back in time for sunset. By early afternoon they have ticked off half of it, spent most of the day watching the coast slide past at cruising speed, and had one rushed swim.
It is the most common mistake on a private boat day, and it is easy to see why. On the water, the hours tell a different story.
Why the list keeps growing
Three things push guests towards an overloaded plan. The first is the map itself. Capri, Positano and Amalfi sit close together in a guidebook, and a straight line between them looks short. A boat rarely follows that line, because it hugs headlands, slows near swimmers and anchored boats, and takes the sea as it finds it.
The second is the feeling that moving along the coast is already sightseeing. It is, up to a point. The first hour of cliffs and villages seen from the deck is extraordinary. The fourth hour of the same view, with the engine running, is less so.
The third is the price of the day. Having booked a private boat for around seven hours at sea, many guests feel they should see as much as possible to get their money’s worth. The logic is understandable, and it works against them.
What an overloaded day costs
Every extra destination takes its share of the clock. The crossing from Naples to Capri alone takes between 45 and 60 minutes depending on the sea, and every leg between the other highlights takes its own slice of the day. Add two or three of those legs to a day and the time left for swimming, snorkelling and simply sitting at anchor shrinks quickly.
Some stops also take longer than expected. The Blue Grotto depends on sea conditions and on a separate entrance ticket, and at busy times boats wait their turn. A seaside lunch at a restaurant reachable only by water is one of the best moments of the day, but it does not suit a schedule that has to be somewhere else by three o’clock.
And there is the return. The day has to finish where it started, so the further the route reaches, the longer the run home. Guests who planned a sunset stop on the way back often find that the last hour is spent in transit rather than in a quiet bay.
One area, a few stops, room to stay
The days that people remember usually follow a simpler pattern: one main area, two or three stops, and freedom to stay longer wherever the water is best. A Positano day might pass under the Li Galli islands, stop for a swim in a cove near Praiano, and finish with the town’s skyline seen from offshore. A Capri day can be built around the Faraglioni, the grottoes on the island’s coast and a long swim, with lunch ashore if the group wants it. A Procida day starting from Naples has Marina Corricella and coves reachable only by boat, with Ischia close enough for an extra swimming stop when time allows.
None of these is a short day. Each still fills the seven hours, but with time in the water rather than time on the move.
Let the skipper shape the order
The other way to avoid the mistake is to hand over part of the planning. A local skipper knows which side of an island will be sheltered that afternoon, which cove fills up first and when a grotto is worth the wait. The operator’s terms already allow the route to change for safety or weather reasons, so a rigid list can end up rewritten anyway.
A better brief is a description of the day you want rather than a list of places. Say whether the group cares most about swimming, photographs, food or simply being on the water. Mention anyone who tires easily, children who need regular breaks, or guests who would rather avoid long open crossings. Picture the group from the Sorrento quay again, this time with a shorter list. Capri in the morning, a long swim below the cliffs, lunch where the boat happens to be, a slow return along the coast. They see fewer places. By five o’clock they have been in the sea four times, and nobody has looked at a watch since noon.
