What To Expect In A Microneedling Procedure

Microneedling may sound like an intimidating procedure. Sadly, it’s often due to the term ‘needle’ that most people want to avoid. However, give microneedling a second thought due to its many benefits.

For those eager to know what microneedling is all about, it may be time to gain an insight into what it involves. Here are several valuable insights on what to expect if you undergo a microneedling procedure.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a collagen induction therapy that aims to promote the rejuvenation of the skin. During the procedure, needles create miniature punctures on the upper layer of the skin. Doing so will trigger the body to generate new collagen and elastin.

In simple terms, it involves using a tool, specifically a microneedling pen with miniature needles at its tip, with settings ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 millimeters. It can penetrate the superficial skin layer using the smallest setting or 0.5 millimeters.

As a response, the body sends out fibroblasts to produce more collagen in the area. Generally, the procedure tricks the skin into thinking there’s a wound. As a result, the skin thickens, and the overall texture improves. The procedure may be ideal if you want to minimize the size of your pores and promote the proper healing of acne scars. If you want to know how the procedure works, checking out Elite Laser Cosmetic Clinic and other similar providers can give you a good head start.

What Happens During A Microneedling Procedure?

What Happens During A Microneedling Procedure?

If you’re planning to undergo the procedure for the first time soon, it may be best to know what happens during one. Generally, the microneedling treatment starts with cleansing the face and then applying a topical numbing cream.

After the cream takes effect, usually in 10 to 20 minutes, the doctor applies a serum that helps promote skin repair and healing.

The doctor will maneuver the microneedling pen back and forth over your face. At this point, the needles move up and down to ensure the serum penetrates. After the procedure, the doctor applies another layer of serum and a mask to seal it.

Will The Procedure Cause Discomfort?

If you initially believe the needles will trigger pain, it may be time to change that mindset. It’s where the numbing cream enters the picture, which minimizes any discomfort. However, expect your skin to turn pinkish, strikingly resembling a sunburn after the procedure. Sometimes, a few miniature scabs might even appear but will typically subside or fade after a few days.

Who Are Suitable Candidates For Microneedling?

If you have significant acne scarring, microneedling may be a suitable solution. The procedure doesn’t involve heat and is safe for all skin types and colors. The treatment is ideal for smoothening the skin and filling any acne scars. Additionally, it can even clear up any miniature bumps present due to clogged pores.

Once you plan on undergoing the procedure, ensure that you don’t have any swelling or infected regions on your skin. If you have a breakout of cystic acne, it’s best to wait until it fully clears up before setting an appointment. Individuals with rosacea, eczema or highly sensitive skin may want to avoid microneedling.

The procedure may not also be suitable for those currently using blood thinners or frequently drinks alcoholic beverages. The reason is that they trigger dehydration and can render the procedure useless.

What Is The Frequency Of Microneedling?

How often you need to undergo microneedling typically depends on the seriousness of the skin problem you’re dealing with. When your skin is in good shape and you can take care of it meticulously, undergoing microneedling every three to six months is usually enough. Those with severe acne scarring may do best with monthly sessions lasting four to six months.

After that, it’s also best to schedule an appointment annually for touch-ups, especially for those who feel their skin requires a boost.

What Is The Skincare Routine After Microneedling?

After a microneedling procedure, expect your skin to turn reddish and sensitive. A good skin care regimen to stick to is to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30. Maintain a strict regimen during the weeks following the treatment.

There are also changes in your usual skincare routine. One is to avoid any products containing retinol and acids such as salicylic and glycolic since these ingredients can be strong. Refrain from applying makeup for at least 24 hours.

You should also keep your skin and body hydrated by increasing your daily water intake. Apply a mild hydrating serum and use a mild cleanser. It may be best to use an antioxidant-rich product to promote healing and collagen production to achieve radiant results. Make sure to avoid using any exfoliating scrubs days after the treatment.

Final Thoughts

Microneedling is a skin treatment worth checking out if you want to maintain radiant skin or are eager to eliminate acne scarring or large pores. In case you have hesitations, these valuable insights can give you an overview of what to expect in a microneedling procedure. As you go through your microneedling sessions, your skin will change for the better in no time.
