Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are known to be inherited conditions that can adversely affect a patient’s connective tissues. It’s these connective tissues that can help to support bones, skin, and tendons, as well as blood vessels and internal organs.

How to Live With Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes

While there are thought to be 13 different types of Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, there are a few types that are more common than others. Some of the most common types are:

  • Vascular Ehlers-Danlos
  • Classical Ehlers-Danlos
  • Kyphoscoliotic Ehlers-Danlos
  • Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos

It is possible to live with this condition. However, every patient may require a different treatment plan from others.

How To Take Care Of Yourself

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome can be quite debilitating, depending on the severity of your symptoms. However, there are some things you can do that may help. For example, a chiropractor near you could help with joint misalignment. A physical therapist may help with strengthening your muscles.

It’s also important that you do not try to do too much. It may be tempting for you to undertake many activities when you’re in less pain. However, doing so can be a mistake. Try to undertake activities slowly so that you’re less likely to injure yourself.

Coping With Long-Term Pain

Many of those who suffer from this condition have to deal with long-term pain. The good news is that with the right treatment, pain can be reduced.

Consider taking anti-inflammatory medication if your joints are inflamed. Please always make sure that you follow the dosage instructions on the package.

You may also find that some anti-inflammatory gels can help with the pain.

Protecting Your Joints

Many patients who suffer from this condition tend to wear splints and joint supports. Wearing this type of protection can help to prevent the joints from becoming too strained. In addition to this, they can also help to prevent further injuries by helping to limit the range of movement.

Those who suffer from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome should avoid taking part in contact sports. This is because there is a real opportunity that they will injure themselves even more. Weight lifting and weight training are not advisable either. Again, the patient may injure themselves should they lift heavy weights.

Dealing With Fatigue

If you tend to suffer from fatigue as a result of having Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, you may be taught how to pace yourself. Some patients also become fatigued because they are in pain much of the time. Again, they may be taught to pace themselves.

Fatigue can often hit a patient quickly. As a result, they may not be able to undertake their chosen activity quite as well. Patients who suffer from fatigue are usually advised to rest. Failing to rest or get a sufficient amount of rest can result in the fatigue failing to dissipate.

If you think that you have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or you’re struggling with it, please speak to your doctor. Your doctor may be able to prescribe medication and a range of therapies.
