Finishing school and heading to college, sixth form, or other further education is exciting, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t an insane amount of pressure. Luckily, there are plenty of steps you can take to be better prepared and find success on your educational journey; continue reading to find out more.

Understand Entry Requirements

Every college or university has a set of entry requirements, which are often directly linked to grades. Therefore, once you’ve chosen a place to study, you need to learn about the entry requirements. The benchmark for each course will vary depending on the college’s reputation and the courses you choose. Typically, you should start by looking at standard courses including maths, literature, and sciences before looking into your specialized choices.

Meet With Your Tutor

When you hit the later years of secondary school, you will be assigned a tutor who will help you with your next steps. Set up a meeting and talk to them about your college and course choices. As well as helping you with your application, they will support you with putting together a career plan, which will help you if you have college interviews.

Improve Note-Taking Skills

The step from high school to college is pretty large. You will need to take notes in class, and no one will wait around for you to finish. Practice taking notes before you head off to college. If you speak to your class teacher and ask if you can use one of these tablets for college in their class, they should allow it; just make sure you’re not procrastinating.

Get Extracurricular

Some people find the school day long enough as it is without taking part in extracurricular activities. However, if you can enrich your college application with evidence of extracurricular activities, they’ll love it. Whether you like to paint, squeeze in extra maths, or learn computer code, your school will likely have a program to suit your needs. If your school doesn’t offer an activity that interests you, then look around for local clubs to take part in.

Practice Writing Skills

Quality of writing and essay structure is more important in college and university, so take the time to improve your skills. If you need to write a personal statement to apply for college, the way you write will form the first impression, so you need to make sure it’s a good one. By this, we don’t mean your handwriting needs to be perfect, but your spelling and grammar need to be on point. To help you with this, you can use a tool like Grammarly to check your work, just don’t take its corrections as scripture.

Heading to college is an exciting time full of changes and pressure. Being prepared for the journey is the best way to keep down your stress levels and enjoy the process. Learn your future college’s entry requirements, set up meetings with your tutor, get extracurricular, and practice your writing, and you’ll be on the right track.
