The history of playing cards goes back dozens of centuries. Since ancient times, they have been used for entertainment, predicting the future and performing tricks. The past of cards is contradictory and vague. There are many versions of their appearance. Each of them is mysterious and full of mysticism.

Over the years, playing cards have experienced many incarnations. The modern market is dotted with a huge number of designer decks. Well, some historical cards are sold at auctions for a lot of money. At the heart of each of them a certain plot, the elements of which are revealed in the colors, shirts and design of the front side. “Dead Souls” based on drawings by Peter Boklevsky

Secretary Peter Boklevsky from Ryazan province became famous in the early 1840s after creating scandalous caricatures of his boss. Because of this he had to leave the service. Later he studied at the Academy of Arts under Bryullov and Klodt and became a famous book graphic artist of those times. The real success came to him after he created illustrations for Gogol’s “The Inspector” (1863) and “Dead Souls” (1881). Books with his drawings were sold in large print runs and were repeatedly reprinted. In 2006, to the 190th anniversary of the artist was released a deck of “Dead Souls”, where the kings were the main characters of the work: Manilov, Sobakevich, Plyushkin and Nozdrev. Chichikov was depicted with a hearts valet, Korobochka – the queen of hearts, Chichikov’s teacher and Petr Petrovich Petukh – jokers. Also in the deck there is a decorative card with the image of the author of the illustrations, and the shirt of the cards is decorated with a portrait of the writer.

Renaissance by Lo Scarabeo

Lo Scarabeo is a company that produces collectible decks with illustrations by famous illustrators. These include Jules Garnier, Alphonse Mucha and many others. The company has reissued the Renaissance deck created by Albert Kretschmer in 1882. The man worked as a costume designer at the Berlin Royal Theater, but most of his free time was spent studying the clothes of different eras. On the basis of them he created his main work “Encyclopedia of Historical Costume” with 1200 pictures. The deck “Renaissance” became the embodiment of this book with an English page, a German knight, a Spanish count, a Scottish queen, a Russian warrior, a Burgundian duke, a Venetian doge and a Turkish sultan. The characters are dressed in XIV-XVI centuries clothes with silk, velvet, precious stones and other fashion elements of this period of time. The main difference from the classic playing deck is that almost all the pictures (except for the aces) have helmets, weapons and crowns.

Tim Burton’s Playing Cards

Many people are unaware that Tim Burton is not only a brilliant director and producer, but also an excellent poet. In 1997, he published a book of poems for children called The Sad Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories. It was illustrated with seemingly horrible characters: Jimmy the Scary Penguin, Voodoo Girl, and the Boy with Carnations in His Eyes. The touching characters later became dolls and characters from the animated series. Burton called his collection “Tragic Toys for Boys and Girls.” It was later used as the basis for Tim Burton’s Playing Cards deck. Boy Mummy became the king of spades, Queen Pillow became the queen of spades, and Roy Toxicoman became the jack of clubs. Skulls with bones are painted on the striped shirts of the cards. You can buy the deck at the MoMA Museum store in New York.
