Maybe you’re looking to get more piercings? Perhaps you’re just a curious person? Regardless, you’re wondering which piercings are the most painful and which piercings are the least painful.

Fortunately, you’ve come to the right place. Below, we’re going to discuss the most painful piercings, the least painful piercings, and everything in between. Let’s get started!

Genital Piercings

Few parts of the human body pack in as many nerves as the genitals. As such, genital piercings tend to produce a great deal of pain. This is true not only of the penis but of the clitoris as well.

Regardless of where you’re piercing these body parts, you’re going to be agitating thousands upon thousands of nerve endings. There’s no way you can do that without expecting a good bit of discomfort.

This isn’t to say that you should avoid piercing your genitals. The pain is only temporary after all. You just need to weigh the pros before doing so.

Nipple Piercings

Nipple piercings have close to the same piercing pain level as genital piercings. This is to say that they hurt a lot.

The reason for this is, of course, the number of nerve endings they possess. See, the nipples are erogenous zones. But while they can provide great pleasure, they can also provide great pain as well.

Of course, nipple piercings might not quite have the negative psychological taboo of genital piercings. Because of this, they might seem less painful overall.

Nose Piercings

Up next are nose piercings. These vary in pain depending on where the nose is pierced. For instance, septum piercings tend to be more painful than upper nose piercings.

It’s also important to mention something about pain duration. Because the septum is thinner, septum piercings tend to heal faster. So, while they might be more painful initially, their pain wears off faster than does the pain associated with upper nose piercings.

All of that said, both types of piercings are extremely common. As such, you shouldn’t let the potential pain deter you from getting one.

Dermal Piercing

A dermal piercing is a piercing that goes into the skin and doesn’t come out of another side. These piercings can be done all over the body. That said, they’re most commonly done on the back, face, and chest.

These piercings aren’t as painful as the ones discussed above. However, they do require sharp metal to be poked through several skin layers. As such, they’re not exactly pleasant either.

Note, however, that the location of the piercing affects pain level. The face, for instance, is a more painful spot to receive a dermal piercing than the back.

Eyebrow Piercings

Eyebrow piercings can be fairly painful. However, they’re not as painful as the piercings discussed above. In fact, in some areas of the eyebrow, they hardly cause any pain at all.

Getting the outer portion of your eyebrow pierced? If so, you shouldn’t expect too much pain. There are few major nerves there, and thus pain is kept to a minimum.

Getting the inner portion of your eyebrow pierced? If so, you’re probably going to experience a good deal of discomfort. There are a number of major nerves in this area, so pain is a high possibility.

Tongue Piercings

Tongue piercings might seem like they would be painful. However, in general, they don’t cause much pain at all. Most individuals experience only slight discomfort when getting a tongue piercing; that discomfort tends to go away within a week.

Now, this isn’t to say that tongue piercings can’t be painful. For some, they actually cause extreme pain. However, that’s fairly rare.

What tongue piercings do cause is ultra-vulnerability to infection. Therefore, if you get one, you need to be sure to brush, floss, and disinfect your mouth thoroughly and regularly. The more consistent you are in the care of your mouth, the faster your piercing will heal and the less painful it will be overall.

Belly Button Piercings

Next up are belly button piercings. Belly button piercings, on the whole, aren’t painful at all. This is because the area around the belly button consists primarily of flesh, and contains very few nerve endings.

At most, you’ll feel just a bit of pressure when the piercing is initially inserted. This will result in a bit of discomfort for the next month or so, but nothing substantial. In the worst-case scenario, it will persist for a year, and grow less and less painful over time.

Ear Piercings

Ear piercings are unquestionably the least painful of all piercings. This is true regardless of where the piercing occurs in the ear. That said, the ear lobes result in the least amount of pain.

Cartilage piercings can be a little more painful. Therefore, rook piercings, conch piercings, and daith piercings can hurt quite a bit.

However, regardless of where the piercing occurs, it will heal quickly and cause only mild discomfort after the piercing has been performed. Most ear piercings heal within a month.

Painful Piercings Might Still Be Worth a Shot

Yes, there are some painful piercings out there. But that doesn’t mean you should avoid them entirely. If you really want a specific type of piercing, you should give it a shot; it’s only a few seconds of pain, after all.
