What Exactly Is A CC Cream And Why Should You Be Putting It On Your Face?

What Is A CC Cream And Why You Should Use It? ((Photo: VG Studio/Shutterstock)

These are the facts you need to know about multi-functional CC creams and why you should have one in your makeup bag.

You learned your BBs; now it is time to learn your CC creams. CC creams are very similar to BBs so before we begin our next lesson, here is a quick refresher on BB creams: Blemish/beauty balms, or BB creams, are multi-functioning products that are a moisturizer, primer, serum, acne treatment, sunscreen and foundation in one handy tube. They are usually tinted to match your skin tone and come in a few different colors–normally light, medium, and dark.

CC creams, or color correcting creams, are multi-purpose products that prime and protect like BBs, but the main difference is that the correct color uses light-diffusing particles, just like the full name states. They treat issues including sallowness, redness, discoloration, and patchiness. Plus, they contain a smattering of nutrients that help your skin. According to Sephora, CC creams have lighter, more natural coverage than their BB sisters. Are you getting the urge to write this in a Venn diagram yet?

Who Is It For

If you want a product that primes, color corrects, protects against sun damage, evens out your skin, and in some cases, helps stop zits and wrinkles, a CC cream is for you. They’re particularly good for people with a bit of redness or dullness who want some coverage but not a face full of foundation.

If you’re looking for an alternative to your full coverage foundation, alphabet creams aren’t it. A BB cream is lighter than a tinted moisturizer, while a CC cream is the sheerest. Though, you can still mix your CC with your foundation for a glowing, concealed finish.

Why You Should Use It

Uh, have you not been listening to anything I said above? CC creams are a skincare-makeup hybrid that tackles most of your skin’s problems, from redness to dryness, and they don’t cost a gazillion dollars.

Application

CC creams are applied in the morning after you wash and tone your face, like your regular moisturizer. Just squeeze out a drop or two and apply it directly with your fingers. There’s no need for fancy makeup brushes here. Save those for your eyeshadow.

You can apply it to your entire face or just the areas you need to correct and moisturize.

Products

1. Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream Hydrating Colour Corrector SPF 30

This inclusive oil-free formula is suitable for all skin tones and types. It even comes in nine different shades. Beat that foundation.

2. Revlon Age Defying CC Cream

If you thought a CC cream couldn’t possibly do any more, this easy-to-blend CC cream will have you retracting that thought. This moisturizer prime protects, color corrects, and helps fight against the first signs of aging.

3. ORIGINS Smarty Plants CC SPF 20 Skin Complexion Corrector

Don’t let the name fool you; this is a very good CC cream, not a house plant with a high IQ that happens to function as a complexion perfector. This CC cream is suitable for all skin types and neutralizes the effects of city pollution and smog. Too bad it doesn’t get rid of that noxious garbage smell too.
