The best eyeshadow palettes of 2023 include the Dior eyeshadow palette, Alima Pure, MAC “Paints,” Maybelline New York The City Mini Eyeshadow Palette, Urban Decay Eyeshadow, Lancome Color Design, SHANY Eyeshadow Palette, Clarins Soft Cream Eye Color, M.A.C. Eye Shadow, Revlon Colorstay Eyeshadow, Sephora Microsmooth Baked Eyeshadow, L’Oréal Metallic Shadow Duo, e.l.f. Studio, Urban Decay Naked 2 Eyeshadow Palette, and NYX “Warm Neutrals” Ultimate Shadow Palette.
Here we list the best eyeshadows on the market that you can find in department stores and even grocery stores. Click to see how much they cost.
Best Luxurious Eyeshadow: Christian Dior 5-Colour Palettes
Dior’s shadows are incredibly luxurious and feature bold, rich colors. The pigments are so intense that the shadows seem to last an eternity. They apply smoothly, like velvet, and can be worn alone or combined with other shades for a customized look.
Urban Decay Eyeshadow
Urban Decay as a brand has become so popular that it knocked MAC off my list this year for the first time in years. These individual shadows run about $18 each (a few dollars more than MAC) and come in 68 decadent shades (Urban Decay’s verbiage, not mine, but I do agree). They go on silky and smooth, tend not to clump, and I love the shimmery, jeweled tones.
Best Palette: Urban Decay Naked 2 Eyeshadow Palette
Since they hit the market a couple of years ago, Urban Decay’s “Naked” and “Naked 2” palettes have risen to the top of the “Best of” lists. Urban Decay is a well-known brand because they do not conduct animal testing and require as many vegan ingredients as possible from their suppliers.
This palette contains 12 full-sized eyeshadows in both matte and shimmery finishes, but what’s brilliant about these shades is that they flatter every eye color.
They tend to be on the warmer side, so they don’t flatter “cool” skin tones as well, and some of the shadows go on very sheer rather than the densely pigmented color I love (see Dior above), but at about $50 for 12 shadows, you can’t beat the value. Paired with Urban Decay’s primer, these shadows will stay on all day.
Best Bang for Your Buck: e.l.f. Studio 141 Piece Master Makeup Collection
Not everyone will need 141 pieces of makeup, but you cannot beat this price if you are a huge makeup enthusiast. One of e.l.f.’s bestsellers, this 141-piece collection includes a whopping 84 eyeshadow shades, 36 lip gloss shades, six blush shades, and much more for less than $50.
Best Organic, Natural Eyeshadow: Alima Pure
For women worried about putting unhealthy cosmetics on their skin, mineral eyeshadows are the way to go. There are many great organic, natural eyeshadows on the market today (get the list of my favorites here), but a good go-to bet is Alima Pure. They’re not too expensive, they’re highly pigmented, and you can apply them wet or dry.
Best Drugstore Smoky Eye: L’Oréal Metallic Shadow Duo, Platinum
This is the best drugstore eyeshadow for a smoky eye. Apply with a special eyeshadow brush and smudge with your finger on the lid and below the bottom lid. Under $10 at drugstores and even cheaper online.
Best Smokey Eye: Sephora Microsmooth Baked Eyeshadow Trio in Black Light
Smoky eyes are here to stay. This affordable gray palette from Sephora has been Kim Kardashian’s favorite since 2006.
Best Grocery Store Shadow: Revlon Colorstay Eyeshadow
If you’re looking to save money on eye shadows but still want quality, check out the Revlon palettes available at your local grocery store. These palettes offer rich, smooth application and long-lasting wear without the high cost of other high-end brands.
Best Drugstore Eyeshadow: Maybelline New York The Nudes Eyeshadow Palette
An Amazon.com bestseller, Maybelline’s “The Nudes” palette is absolutely perfect for blue, green, and brown eyes. Create smokey eyes or use a basic mid-range color for the day.
Best Cream Shadow: MAC ‘Paints’
Want your eye shadow to last all night? Try using cream shadows as a base. Apply it under your powder shadows to prevent creasing caused by oils. One of my favorites is Stilife; its color payoff is great.
Best Vibrant Shadows: Lancome Color Design
Trending now are bold, jewel-toned eyes with shades of blue, purple, and green. These colors are characterized by their intense pigments, which give them a deep and rich hue. They are also super smooth and easy to blend, making them perfect for creating a striking look.
We love Lancome’s line of 43 shades in five finishes. Go for the pigment-packed “Intense” shades and keep your color below your crease.
Best Shimmer Shadows: SHANY Eyeshadow Palette, Ultra Shimmer
No shadow is sexier than the shimmery, glimmery shades. Glittery shadows have been popular for years and show no signs of going away. We like this palette from Shany because it gets fantastic reviews on Amazon.com and is super affordable. However, you’ll notice that this glimmer is mostly for smokey eyes.
Almost every beauty brand has shimmery shadows. Whether you go for creams or powder, you’ll love the incandescent glows these cast.
Best Pink Shadow: Clarins Soft Cream Eye Colour in Sugar Pink
Pink shades are hot for spring and summer 2023 and complement every skin tone. Our favorite is Clarins Soft Cream Eye Color in Sugar Pink.
Best to Awaken Eyes: M.A.C. Eye Shadow in Shroom
This taupe eyeshadow makes eyes pop, which is great in the mornings when you need to look more awake than you feel. You can use it as a cheek highlighter as well. This blush is an Allure Magazine 2010 Readers’ Choice Award winner.
