5 Treatments for Hair Thinning That May Actually Work

Treatments for Hair Thinning

So here is the ugly truth: No matter how much we try, we can’t change the size of our hair follicles. No amount of products will completely alter your fine hair if you are born with it—it’s simply genetics. But of course, there are ways to add volume, help maintain good hair health, and keep your hair from getting any thinner.

Why Is Your Hair Thinning Out?

Genetics aside, you have to determine what is going on in your body that contributes to hair thinning. While it’s normal for your hair to get thinner when you get older, there are other underlying causes that can lead to hair thinning.

One thing you can look into is your lifestyle choices. Are you often stressed? Do you have a hormonal imbalance? How about other health issues like thyroid irregularities? Do you eat a balanced diet? Try to examine those things to help you determine the cause.

What Can You Do?

Once you have examined those things, it’ll be easier for you to address your hair problems and determine which remedy will work for you. There are innovative products available in the market that may help you boost the look and feel of each hair strand. Keep scrolling to find out the answers you need for making your hair look thicker.

#1: Volumizing Products

When it comes to thin hair types, the right hair styling products become the whole nine yards. If you have thin hair, look for the best blow dryers available. Be mindful of the wattage because super high wattage can be too much for thin hair. Instead, look for a fairly low-watt model or at least one with adjustable heat settings.

#2: Scalp Massage

Who says massages are just for relaxation? A 2016 study shows that massaging your scalp stretches the cells of hair follicles—helping your thin hair grow thick and strong. This simple massage stimulates the follicles to grow thicker hair.

It may also help dilate blood vessels underneath the skin and, as a result, encourages hair growth. The study was conducted for 24 weeks, which means you will have to commit to scalp massages for a long period to achieve the best result.

#3: Say Goodbye to Sulfate-Free Shampoo

If you have been using shampoo products with sulfates in the ingredients, then it’s time to throw them out and never look back. Sulfates are responsible for making shampoos super sudsy lather. Although they are very effective at removing dirt from your hair, they also strip off your hair from its natural oils and proteins that keep your hair looking shiny and healthy.

Preferably, use a thinning therapy shampoo that’s jam-packed with strand-loving ingredients that nourish and promote healthy hair rather than stripping the good stuff off. It may not be as sudsy when you wash, but you’ll get used to it. It’s definitely worth it if you want to add thickness to your hair.

#4: Up Your Healthy Fats Intake

Medical experts cannot stress this enough. Your diet plays a vital role in your life. It dictates pretty much everything—from how you feel and think to what you look like. Experts say that eating two avocados a day improves hair health. In the context of a balanced and healthy diet, avocado consumption fits perfectly into a variety of healthy meal plans because it is naturally packed with a considerable amount of dietary fiber, magnesium, potassium, vitamins A, C, E, and B6, as well as folate.

A healthy balanced diet rich in fatty acids can help promote hair growth. Not only does it prevent hair loss and breakage, but it also helps reduce scalp inflammation. So, start increasing your intake of avocados, whole eggs, and salmon, among others that also offer healthy fats and omega 3s!

#5: Address Your Hormones

Hormonal imbalance can also affect your hair thickness. Women who have this condition and new mothers may experience hair thinning, leading to hair loss due to a drop in their estrogen levels. High levels of estrogen help the hair grow full and thick, while low levels of estrogen can lead to thin and halted hair growth resulting in hair loss.

We all know that estrogen is secreted through adrenal glands and ovaries, so when a person is often stressed, the adrenals are typically overburdened. As a result, symptoms of menopause like hair loss occur prematurely and even excessively for some.

While we know that some things are beyond our control, there are ways to help keep your stress hormone production at a minimum and keep your hair shinier, healthier, and thicker. Try consulting your physician about supplements with adaptogenic herbs such as Ashwagandha root, leaf extract, and amino acids to support keratin production.

Ultimately, maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle improves your overall health as it helps you meet all the essential nutrients needed by the body—including nutrients needed for hair health.
