How To Keep Your Hair Looking Its Best This Fall

Your wardrobe gets a makeover for fall but you can’t forget about your hair. We all love the summer but it can do some serious damage to our hair thanks to the sun’s strong rays, the winds, and the chlorine from frequent dips in the pool. At the end of the season, your hair is probably in need of some TLC. We spoke with Michael Sparks, celebrity hairstylist and owner of Cie Sparks Salon in Malibu for tips on how to get your hair looking flawless again for the new season.

The first thing you need to do is repair any damage. Sorry, haircut-phobes but the best way to get rid of those straggly ends is with trim. Michael also suggests doing a regular conditioning treatment to help deter split ends. We recommend using Deep Repair Hair Masque ($17, Nioxin) once or twice a week to get your locks looking lovely. It only takes a few minutes and you don’t need to use any heat. To keep your locks looking their best, you should make regular trims and deep conditioning part of your routine all year long.

If your hair color has a green tinge from the sun and frequent swims, look for products specifically formulated for chlorine-damaged hair. We recommend Swimmers Wellness Kit ($30, Malibu C). The kit contains vegan shampoo, conditioner, and four treatment sachets. The products nourish hair while removing damaging mineral deposits that can build up after swimming in the ocean or pool.

If you found that your hair color has gone brassy from all your summer fun, look for a treatment that will tone down the yellow in your hair. Use a violet or blue shampoo every other wash to banish the yellow for good. We suggest Color Endure Violet Shampoo ($33.99, Joico) for keeping your locks looking great.

When it comes to getting your hair ready for the cooler weather, you should keep your regular trims and conditions treatments, especially if you’re going to be dyeing your hair a darker shade for the season. Furthermore, Michael suggests swapping your regular shampoo and conditioner for a calming formula. We like Tea Tree And Sea Buckhorn Calming Shampoo ($7.19, Nature’s Gate). Michael explains, “Hair health starts at the scalp so it’s extra important to pamper it when switching seasons.” He also warns about product overload. If you put too much product on your scalp, it will make it look greasier and give the illusion that you have more damage than you really do.

Once you’ve done your deep conditioning treatments and put reminders into your phone for your haircut appointments, all you need to worry about is your fall wardrobe–and where you can get a pumpkin spice drink.
