34% of women state that they wear hair extensions regularly. While extensions have become a useful tool to change up one’s look, you’ve got to take the time to properly care for them to ensure longevity.

If this is your first time wearing hair extensions or you’re a pro needing a refresher course, we’re here to help. Here’s a brief guide about caring for hair extensions the right way.

How to Care for Hair Extensions

Use Proper Brushing Technique

One of the first things you should do when caring for your hair extensions is to brush them. Be careful not to brush through extensions aggressively.

Instead, gather the hair in sections and gently brush out the tangles. Start from the bottom and work your way to the top. Do not brush your extensions when they are wet because this can increase the amount of extension breakage you experience.

When you order hair extensions, check the site to see if they suggest a specific brush for that extension brand.

Use Minimal Products

Using too much product or washing extensions excessively can reduce the length of time you wear them. Hair extensions are not like your regular hair; therefore, constant heat styling and product usage can damage the extension and affect its appearance.

Brush Extensions Before Washing

Hair sheds as a natural part of its life cycle, and extensions are no exception. However, excessive shedding can leave bald patches throughout the extension.

To reduce the amount of shedding you’ll experience, remember to brush your hair before washing it. This reduces the likelihood of the extensions becoming tangled once you’ve begun the washing process.

Blow Dry in Sections

Instead of blow-drying your hair in one huge mass, it’s recommended that you do it in sections. Sectioning your hair before blow-drying ensures that each section is completely dry before you move on to the styling phase of your hair regime.

Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner

As stated before, you’ll want to keep product usage to a minimum, but when you’re washing your extensions, use conditioners and shampoos that are sulfate-free. Products that are free of sulfates will keep your extensions from becoming dry and dull in appearance.

Use Heat Protectant

If you do find yourself using heating tools, frequently protect the extensions from heat damage. The best way to do this is first to adjust your tools’ temperature so that it doesn’t burn your extensions.

The next thing you’ll want to do is use a heat protectant to cover the extensions and prevent further damage.

How to Care for Hair Extensions 101

Hair extensions are a huge investment, and with any investment, you’re going to want to get the most use out of them. Following the tips we’ve given, such as brushing your extensions gently or using a heat protectant, will help your extensions last longer.
