There are few times in your life when you’re more nervous than on a first date. You rehearse everything, making sure the reservations are set, that your hair is perfect and that you look good. Just make sure not to overlook the most important aspect of your wardrobe: your shoes. Make sure you choose the right shoes for a first date.
I’ve been on a lot of first dates so I know the stress and fear of the unknown. While I can’t help with a lot of the other stuff, I can help you choose the most important part of what you’re wearing: your shoes.
Follow these simple 5 steps for picking the right men’s shoes for a first date.
1. Your Shoes Should Be Current: Don’t Look Like You’re Living in 1910
Make sure you’re up with current styles and your shoes aren’t older than your date. You shouldn’t have to dust them off after getting them out of the closet, and they should also look smart. The same goes for the rest of your outfit. If you’re not sure, then it’s time for an upgrade.
2. Choose the Right Men’s Shoes for the Occasion
This is a date, not a prom. Choose the right shoes for a first date which means they should fall somewhere between sneakers and dress shoes. That gives you a lot of leeway. If you’re wearing khakis, a nice oxford or loafer shoes should do. If you’re wearing jeans, then you have a little more flexibility and can even throw casual boots into the mix.
3. Make those Shoes Shine
Not only should your shoes be right for the occasion and in style, they also need to be clean. That doesn’t mean you have to get out your shine box and go nuts, but you should wipe them down and make sure they look their best. Nothing will turn her off more than if you show up with great-looking clothes and nasty-looking shoes.
4. Shoes Should be the Most Expensive Piece of your Outfit
I know $200 jeans are all the rage right now, but your shoes should be the most expensive part of your wardrobe (with the possible exception of a really nice coat). Shoes are the base of everything you wear and set the tone for your personal style. Make sure you invest in them, and they will return the favor.
5. Don’t Make a Statement with Your Shoes
Now isn’t the time to show her that you don’t follow any rules when it comes to style and shows up with shoes that only Johnny Depp would wear. You don’t also have to be too conservative, but your shoes should scream “stability” and “dependability.” Great shoes will say that you care about the way you look, about details, and respect her enough to put some effort into your style. Mark my words; she’ll be looking.
