Skipping shampoo this summer? Add these minimalist pieces of hair jewelry to your locks and no one will be the wiser.
This morning I was quickly scrolling through photos from the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards and thinking, yup, cool, pretty, nice, eh, OK, until I came across a picture that stopped me in my tracks. It was the photo above, of singer/songwriter Janelle Monáe. Now, Janelle usually knocks it out of the park in the fashion and beauty department, so I certainly wasn’t surprised to see her looking gorgeous. What threw me for a loop about the photo were those super cool silver rings she incorporated into her hair.
I know that hair jewelry is by no means a new phenomenon, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone master the look in such a summer-appropriate and chic way. I’ve always associated hair jewelry as being a very “winter” sort of thing to do–it’s like, you grab your heavy, jewel-laden barrettes to give your holiday looks some sparkle–but Janelle’s minimalist rings are the perfect way to add a bit of something extra to your otherwise super simple (and let’s be real, usually several-days-unwashed) summer hair.
Now, that’s not to say that Janelle’s hair is unwashed or that her hairstyle was easy to do–I can’t even imagine the work that would have gone into it–but us lazy girls can still take inspiration from her look. If your typical summer hair routine consists of spraying on dry shampoo and not much else, consider adding one more step to the mix by incorporating any of these minimalist pieces of hair jewelry into your look. Oh, and prepare yourself for the onslaught of compliments, because trust me, they’ll be coming your way.

Free People hair rings
Man, this was a huge missed opportunity on the part of Free People–those rings were made for a woman with dreadlocks or braids. Regardless, you get the point: silver rings are a super-easy way to add a bit of badassery to your hair.

OK, so this look might not be office appropriate, but it is perfect for the weekends. All you need to create this look is five minutes and a hair straightener (because, yes, you’re going to flat iron those charms into your hair).

This bobby pin is giving me major ’90s flashbacks (and I mean that in the best way possible).

I wouldn’t be wearing this draped hair chain at the beach or at the cottage, but for a Sunday afternoon of window shopping? Absolutely.
